Alcohol Ink is an amazing medium. You’ve seen some gorgeous work but, as a beginner, have no idea what to do next or how to get more control. I was where you are two years ago when I found Karen Walker’s fabulous Alcohol Ink online classes. Her kindness and inspiration has moved many of us to make Alcohol Ink our medium of choice. She has decided to take a step back from the Alcohol Ink painting world and has handed the teaching torch over to me.
The course is online using Moodle, a learning management system, with sharing and discussion in a private Facebook group.
With 30-50 new videos and an easy to follow text, these courses stimulate new ideas and gives you skills to move to the next level of alcohol ink painting. The course materials are available to you for one year. The cost of the course is $60 US
How does the class work?
The class is not “live” online. It is self paced. There are lessons, videos, and suggested assignments for each week. You do them on your own time and then share them with a private facebook group.
I like to give the students the opportunity to start together so they can share the same projects but I’ve found that people want to work at their own pace and don’t mind sharing a week or two off from each other. The “year” idea is to allow you to go back and use the lessons, videos and materials to keep on practicing for a year.

The material list is in the Prepare class that you will get access to when I receive payment and put you in the class.

I am interested in your online class. Are your techniques suitable for use on ceramics? Can the result be sealed or preserved against wear by water or washing?

Sorry for the delay getting back to you jolee. There are people that seal their ceramic tiles to use as coasters. The techniques I teach on how to control the inks, the role of alcohol with the dyes and then marker and pen work can be used with any medium. The more advanced classes teach about painting fur and feathers and light and dark to get a 3D look. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

I am going to enroll in your Beginner Class in hopes of learning techniques that I can transfer to my ceramic art. I am concerned about durability, of course, but I am so entranced by the behavior of AI that I’m going to give it a try!

What brand of alcohol inks do you prefer?

Hi Margie, I primarily use the Adirondack and Spectrum Noir Refills. Most people use the Adirondacks because they are easy to find, relatively inexpensive and last a long time. I like the Spectrum Noir refills because they are intense with a less alcohol to dye ratio but they have to be bought one at a time. The Pinata’s are fun but have less available colors. I’ve started buying Copic refills. The copics are very nice but there are over 300 different colors and can be expensive.

Hi Sharon,
The class is made up of two parts: 1)lessons and videos on a gnomio.com site and 2)sharing in a private Facebook group. Each week there are new lessons and videos available for you to view at your own pace. As you paint, you are welcome to share with the other students in a facebook group but uploading your images. After the four weeks of material, all of the lessons, videos and sharing are available for one year. Does that help?

yes it does. One thing I am very interested in is learning a “pouring technique” . Is this covered in your level two class?

The Level 2 class is each month as well. The Level 3 will be alternating one per quarter. Water in Late January, then Pets, then Flowers or Water 2

I am a AI self taught painter but I would love to ltake your lessons, however I am leaving at the end of October to be back around November the 20th,this is why I don’t want to take the lessons before January 2017.
I am a little concern about the one year availability of the course because I don’t know if I would have the time to cover everything within that time and also, what if I want a reference, is it gone for good?

Hi Marie-Andree. Each course usually takes 4-6 weeks to do so one year should be good for one course. So for example you could take Level 1 January – Dec 2017. Then take Level 2 February ’17 – January’18, etc. Of course I will work with you. You also have a text version of the class so all of the lessons can be printed out. Just let me know what I an do to help.

Hi Sharon, each class is $60. They are each 3-4 weeks long with 40-60 videos. Lots of information and lots of fun.
